Lignin, a major component of lignocellulosic biomass, is gaining recognition as a sustainable raw material for various value-added products. This paper focuses on the extraction and valorisation of lignin from black liquor, a by-product of the pulping process. Preliminary findings demonstrated the antioxidant potential of black liquor lignin, suggesting its applicability in cosmetics and personal care products. Furthermore, activated carbon (AC) was successfully synthesised from lignin under various activation conditions, achieving specific surface areas up to 773 m²/g. These AC materials show potential for use in water purification and pollution control. The versatility of lignin allows its application across diverse sectors, from biofuels and chemicals to bioplastics and pharmaceuticals. Given the
increasing demand for renewable and eco-friendly alternatives, lignin from black liquor offers significant potential as a value-added product. This work showcases FRIM’s ongoing research to tap lignin’s potential and promote a sustainable, circular bioeconomy.
