Executive Summary

This Conservation Action Plan (CAP) was specifically developed to prevent the in situ extinction of the endemic and Critically Endangered Begonia herveyana based on the results from population biology study and threat assessment. The populations of this rare herbaceous plant are threatened by habitat erosion and degradation, effects of population fragmentation and land use development. The species requires moist conditions and the slightly cooler and shaded environment in the forest to grow well. Large gaps in the forest canopy can cause plant mortality by increased sun exposure, loss of moisture and competition from light demanding plants or weeds. Water stress adversely impacts the plant’s reproduction by causing a drastic drop in flowering and fruiting intensity. Mature plants formed almost half of the population and regeneration was poor. The overall genetic diversity was low in the population. The objectives of the CAP include ensuring the viability and survival of existing populations and, in addition, to safeguard the species through ex situ conservation. For each objective, appropriate management measures are suggested.

Ringkasan Eksekutif
