This book presents a study on the potential of planting forest species on troubled land. Problematic areas are not normally chosen as planting sites, especially for forest species. Reintroducing trees on troubled areas, such as bris soil, highly explored, storms and former mining areas was an initiative designed to recover deforested natural forests.

Forest plantations in Malaysia were designed to complement the natural forest for supply of the downstream timber industry. Due to relatively short rotations and high productivity, new forests are suitable to produce superior quality wood in a span of three to 30 years. Included in this book are a few succesful accounts of planted forest plantation species such as Acacia mangium, Hopea odorata and Khaya ivorensis at problematic areas, namely FRIM Setiu and Bidor Research Stations as well as FRIM campus.

This book also describes the chemical, physical and natural durability properties of forest plantation species. It is hoped that this study will assist in the effort of supplying adequate forest plantation species in problematic areas and further introduce opportunities for new economic resources.
